Tooth Extraction

Dentists make every effort to save your teeth, but in some cases, tooth extraction is necessary to protect your oral health. Dr. Ryan K. Austin performs tooth extractions with expert precision and comfort to patients throughout South Ogden and Brigham City, UT. Find out why you should choose our board-certified oral surgeon for an extraction...

What are the Benefits of an Extraction?

PAIN RELIEF

A badly damaged or infected tooth can cause extreme pain, affecting your everyday quality of life. For teeth that can’t be treated with a root canaltooth extraction is the best option to eliminate pain for good.

IMPROVE ORAL HEALTH

Keeping a decayed tooth may cause more harm than good. It can cause bacteria to spread to the surrounding teeth and gums, causing more problems in the long run and putting your oral health at risk.

PREPARATION FOR ORTHODONTICS

Crowded or impacted teeth can cause problems over time and affect your bite. Tooth extraction creates enough space in your mouth for orthodontic treatment, allowing your teeth to gradually shift into their optimal positions.

Signs You May Need a Tooth Extraction

If dental care can preserve your natural tooth, our Greater Ogden, UT, dentist will recommend treatment. In cases where teeth are beyond repair, our dentistry office will recommend extraction. Signs you may need a tooth extraction include:

ADVANCED TOOTH INFECTION

An infected root canal is very painful and if left untreated, can cause the infection to spread. In cases where the infection is advanced, we may recommend pulling the tooth to protect your oral health and avoid complications.

SEVERE GUM DISEASE

If your gum disease is left untreated, it can cause gum recession and lead the gums to pull away from your tooth. If the tooth becomes loose enough, extracting it may be your best option.

IMPACTED WISDOM TEETH

Impacted wisdom teeth can be painful and cause your other teeth to shift position, leading to dental crowding, abscesses, and other painful oral conditions. Extracting wisdom teeth will prevent future complications for your smile.

MAJOR TOOTH DECAY

A tooth with severe decay may not be repairable with a filling or even a dental crown, making it a candidate for extraction.

We Employ a Gentle Extraction Technique

Dr. Austin uses advanced instruments and equipment that allow for as simple of an extraction as possible with minimal removal of bone to allow for the best opportunity to later place a dental implant in the extraction site. He also uses high-speed nitrogen-driven hand pieces that allow for minimal trauma and make the procedure go as quickly as possible.

The Consequences of Keeping Damaged Teeth

A tooth that is infected, impacted, or too decayed to treat can affect all of your other teeth. Decay and infection can spread from tooth to tooth, harming your oral health. The more teeth that are affected, the more extensive your dental treatment will need to be to restore your oral health.

Our South Ogden dentists only recommend extractions if they're necessary to preserve your oral health.

Your Comfort Is Our #1 Priority

We understand that going to the dentist can be scary for patients. Maybe you’ve had a bad experience in the past or have a dental phobia that's preventing you from getting the care you deserve. We offer IV sedation for those who are anxious and want to doze off during their procedure. We also offer nitrous oxide, otherwise known as laughing gas, free of charge.

Dr. Austin and his staff have extensive training on anesthesia safety protocols and regularly take continuing education courses in dentistry to best serve our patients. Your comfort is our highest priority, and we strive to help you feel safe and at ease during your entire visit at our South Ogden or Brigham City dental offices serving the Greater Ogden, UT, area.

Paying for Treatment

Our cost for tooth extraction is very reasonable, especially for a specialist. We accept nearly all dental insurance plans to make the cost as low as possible.

What to Expect during Treatment

Consultation

Dr. Austin uses advanced technology to evaluate your oral health and determine if an extraction is right for you. He will explain every step to you and answer any questions you have.

Sutures

Once extraction is complete, Dr. Austin will suture the area and place a piece of gauze for you to bite on.

Recovery

A blood clot eventually forms in the extraction site. We provide you with all aftercare instructions and check up on you to see how you are doing.

Anesthesia

The extraction area is numbed with local anesthesia. We can also administer nitrous oxide or IV sedation at this time for maximum comfort.

What to Expect after Treatment

BLEEDING

Bleeding is normal and will subside over time. We will provide you with dental gauze to help control the blood flow.

MEDICATION

To help manage any discomfort, Dr. Austin can prescribe pain medication or recommend some over-the-counter options.

DRY SOCKET

Do not use a straw, make sucking motions, or smoke. This can dislodge the blood clot and cause dry socket. Call us if this occurs.

SWELLING

It is normal to experience swelling after your procedure. Using an ice pack or bag of frozen vegetables can help reduce the swelling.

FOOD

Our South Ogden dentist recommends a soft food diet for a few days. You may gradually introduce more solid foods at your discretion.

ACTIVITY

Do not engage in exercise for 24 hours after treatment. Strenuous activity can increase blood pressure and cause bleeding.

The Importance of Avoid Smoking

Our South Ogden, UT, dentist recommends avoiding smoking cigarettes for at least 72 hours after your tooth extraction. Immediately after your extraction, a clot will form to cover the extraction site. The sucking motion of smoking can prematurely dislodge this clot and cause dry socket, a painful condition that occurs when the nerves and bone at the extraction site are exposed.
