Sedation Dentistry Helps With Multiple Concerns

ANXIETY

Nervous about your dental appointment? Sedation dentistry at our South Ogden and Brigham City, UT, offices can help you relax throughout your time in the dentist's chair.

STRONG GAG REFLEX

Dental patients with a strong gag reflex can find undergoing any dental procedure to be problematic. Sedation can help you relax and curb this uncomfortable response.

DIFFICULTY SITTING STILL

Cerebral palsy, Parkinson's disease, and other medical conditions can make sitting still for long periods difficult for patients. Sedation dentistry can make dental care a comfortable experience. Sedation dentistry allows the dentist to perform procedures more efficiently.

COMPLEX SURGICAL PROCEDURES

Dr. Austin performs many lengthy and advanced procedures, such as jaw surgery and dental implant placement. Dental patients can relax with sedation options that quickly help the dentistry procedure pass. Your dentist will also administer a local anesthetic to ensure a painless experience.

Dental Care

Worth Traveling For

"Dr. Austin and staff were amazing. I traveled from Nevada and I am so glad I did. He even called me to see how I was doing that night. My family is extremely grateful for the quality care I received with 2 major procedures. I will continue care with Dr. Austin's office for our whole family even though we have to travel to his office."

Our Sedation Dentistry Options

You have options when it comes to the type of sedation used in your procedure. Your dentist may recommend one form of sedation over the other depending on your level of anxiety, the complexity of your procedure, and other factors. Dr. Austin administers:

Nitrous Oxide

— Administered through a mask placed over the nose, this colorless gas helps dental patients relax during the procedure without the drowsy after-effects of IV sedation.

IV Sedation

— Intravenous (IV) sedation is administered through a needle in the patient's hand or arm and can help patients achieve deep levels of relaxation.

Do You Offer Oral Conscious Sedation?

Dr. Austin does not offer oral medication. This form of sedation is less reliable because it takes longer to set in. Patients need to take the oral medication ahead of their appointment, and the dentist cannot adjust the strength of the oral sedation throughout the dentistry procedure. Nitrous oxide and IV sedation take effect almost immediately and can be adjusted throughout your procedure, making these options a more reliable choice than oral sedation.

Which Sedation Dentistry Method Is Right for You?

NITROUS OXIDE

FOR LIGHTER SEDATION

Nitrous oxide, otherwise known as laughing gas, is the lightest level of conscious sedation we offer. The gas takes effect in just a few minutes. You may feel a tingly or numb sensation in your body combined with a calm and relaxed mental state. This form of sedation is great for dental patients undergoing simpler procedures, like tooth extraction. Your dentist can adjust the effects throughout the procedure to ensure a comfortable experience.

IV SEDATION

FOR DEEPER SEDATION

IV sedation is used to achieve deep levels of relaxation during your surgical procedure. The effects of IV sedation set in almost immediately and can be easily adjusted throughout the procedure to keep you in a deeply relaxed state. With IV sedation, the patient is conscious and able to respond to the dentist but will not remember the procedure afterward. This consciousness makes IV sedation safer and more reliable than medical anesthesia.

Am I a Good Candidate

For Sedation Dentistry?

Candidacy will vary for nitrous oxide sedation and IV sedation, but patients should generally meet these requirements:

Our dentist can help you determine which sedation option is a good fit based on your candidacy, the complexity of your surgery, and other contributing factors.

Sedation Helps Ogden-Area Patients

Explore Our Exciting Treatments

As our South Ogden sedation dentistry patients have learned, there's no need to put off necessary dental care. We can help you feel completely at ease throughout your treatment. Once you're comfortable, you can pursue a whole new world of possibilities, including:

Dental Implants

After losing a tooth or teeth, you can get your smile back - and that's thanks to implants. These tiny biocompatible screws replace your tooth roots and, with the help of an abutment, can support custom crowns, bridges, or dentures.

Bone Grafting

For Ogden-area patients who aren't yet eligible for implants, we offer bone grafting. It helps replenish your bone tissue, which is commonly diminished after patients lose their natural teeth, to make you an implant candidate.

Tooth Extraction

At our practice , we offer tooth extractions for cases like severe breakage and deep decay, as well as wisdom tooth extraction. Both can be necessary for your health and oral function, making them an investment in your wellness.

Frequently Asked Sedation Aftercare Questions

When do the effects wear off?

With nitrous oxide, the effects of the medication wear off within 15 minutes after the mask is removed. The effects should fully wear off for IV sedation within six hours of your procedure.

Can I drive myself home?

Since the effects of nitrous oxide wear off quickly, patients can drive themselves home without the drowsiness and other side effects that accompany deeper sedation methods. In contrast, dental patients who undergo IV sedation will need to arrange a ride home.

How will I feel after the procedure?

Patients who choose nitrous oxide may feel dizzy and disoriented after the mask is removed, but these effects wear off quickly. IV sedation patients will feel tired, disoriented, and sometimes nauseous.

When can I return to work?

A considerable benefit of nitrous oxide is that patients can return to work and their daily routines immediately following the operation. You can return to normal activities 24 hours after IV sedation, but our dentist may suggest a more extended recovery period depending on the surgery.

Is Sedation Dentistry Safe?

How We Ensure Your Health and Wellness

Yes. We perform all sedation methods in the office so you can relax in a familiar setting with a staff you trust. Additionally, both IV sedation and nitrous oxide are adjustable, which allows us to administer the right amount of sedation needed for you.

In addition, we also have a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) who can come in to monitor special cases, like sedation performed on children, high-risk patients, and adults with disabilities.
