Bone Grafting

If you’ve lost a tooth due to decay, gum disease, or trauma, your jawbone may be too weak to be able to support dental implants. Dr. Ryan K. Austin performs bone grafting to create a solid foundation for dental implants and restore your smile and oral health. Find out why patients throughout South Ogden and Brigham City, UT, choose us.

How Does the Procedure Work?

A bone graft is a common dental surgery that allows your dentist or oral surgeon to rebuild jaw tissue in preparation for dental implants using graft material. Missing teeth causes the jawbone to lose volume and shrink over time, resulting in bone loss. A dental implant requires a rock-solid foundation that it can fuse with and use to support restorations.

This treatment ensures that strong, high-quality bone is available for implant placement, ensuring your results will last for many years. Dr. Austin uses sophisticated techniques with your comfort in mind at all times. For patients who are anxious or would like some extra peace of mind, we offer IV sedation at a reasonable cost at our dental offices in South Ogden and Brigham City.

What Are the Benefits of Bone Grafting?

Boost Confidence

A bone graft begins the process of replacing a missing tooth, restoring your confidence in your smile. Dr. Austin uses advanced grafting material and cutting-edge techniques to achieve unbeatable results.

MAINTAIN JAW HEALTH

Missing teeth cause the jawbone to deteriorate over time, changing your facial structure and making you look older than you are. A bone graft rebuilds loss tissue and prevents bone atrophy in the future, preserving your appearance.

HIGH SUCCESS RATE

When performed by an experienced oral surgeon, grafting creates a foundation for implants that is just as strong and successful as natural boneDental implants that are placed following a bone graft can last a lifetime.

Bone Grafting Techniques

Simple Extraction Site
Bone Grafting

For simple extraction bone grafts, Dr. Austin uses Cytoplast PTFE non-resorbable membranes. They provide consistently successful results and help achieve maximum bone width preservation. They are also biocompatible and create little inflammation and pain.

Horizontal & Vertical
Bone Augmentation

In these cases, our dentist also uses resorbable collagen membranes and Cytoplast PTFE sutures to ensure that the incision site doesn't open up. He typically uses cortico-cancellous allograft bone chips so that most patients don't require an additional donor site surgery.

Sinus Augmentation
Bone Grafting

When performing sinus grafts, Dr. Austin uses a mixture of allograft and xenograft to achieve predictable and successful results of adequate bone for dental implants. Collatape collagen membranes also limit the amount of soft tissue ingrowth into the graft material.

Sutures

The surgery site is carefully closed with sutures. Special membranes are used to ensure a sealed incision and graft site that prevents bacteria from entering.

Recovery

Dr. Austin will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions and medication to aid you during recovery. Healing after a graft usually takes a few months to complete. After the tissue has fully healed, you're ready for dental implants.

Anesthesia

Anesthesia is administered to ensure your comfort at all times. Patients who are anxious may also choose to undergo IV sedation for maximum comfort.

Placement

After the patient is comfortable, Dr. Austin will create a small incision in the gums. He carefully places bone graft material into the affected jaw area, allowing it to fuse with the natural tissues.

What to Expect after the Procedure

Your body recognizes the bone graft material and will begin to regenerate new bone. This causes the jawbone to become stronger over time throughout the healing process. Eventually, the new bone replaces the grafting material entirely, creating a rock-solid foundation for implant placement at our South Ogden or Brigham City dental offices.

Frequently Asked Questions

About Bone Grafting

Do I really need dental implants later?

Yes. Dental implants provide the jawbone with the stimulation it needs to remain healthy. A bone graft builds up the site so that the implant posts have sufficient material to graft to. Once dental implants are placed, they act as artificial tooth roots to support the existing and new bone material to prevent further bone loss. They also support restorations to restore your oral function and fill in the gaps for a beautiful smile.

What is an allograft?

An allograft is a type of bone graft that uses graft material from a cadaver. The material is typically processed using a freeze-dry method before being used for surgery.

Will insurance cover bone grafting?

In most cases, dental insurance will at least partially cover the bone graft procedure, but this will vary by plan and provider. During your consultation at our South Ogden practice, we will verify your coverage to maximize your benefits and give you time to accurately plan and budget before your treatment.
